Whether you are counting exercise reps, laps in a pool, people walking through a door, or items in a stockroom, reaching for a physical tally counter is not always convenient. A browser-based tap counter does the same job from any device — phone, tablet, or desktop — with no app to install and no account to create.

This guide covers everything the free Online Tap Counter can do — from basic tapping to keyboard shortcuts, swipe gestures, fullscreen mode, and the screen-on feature that stops your phone from going to sleep mid-count.

How to use the tap counter

1

Open the counter

Go to the Tap Counter — no sign-up, no account, no app download. The counter starts at 0 and is ready immediately.

2

Tap or click to count

Tap or click anywhere on the large counter area to add 1. The number updates instantly. On mobile, the phone vibrates briefly (15 ms) on each tap to give tactile confirmation — similar to a physical clicker.

3

Subtract when needed

Made a mistake? Tap the − button in the control bar, press the minus key on your keyboard, or swipe down on a touchscreen. The count never drops below 0.

4

Reset to start over

Tap Reset to bring the count back to 0. If the count is 10 or above, the tool asks for confirmation before resetting — this prevents accidental resets mid-session.

5

Copy the count

Tap Copy to copy the current number to your clipboard. Useful for pasting into a spreadsheet, notes app, or message without having to re-read the screen.

Keyboard shortcuts

On desktop, you never need to move your mouse. Every action has a keyboard shortcut so you can keep your eyes on what you are counting:

KeyActionWhen to use
Space+=
Increment (+1)Main counting key — easiest to tap repeatedly
Decrement (−1)Correct a miscount without breaking rhythm
R
Reset to 0Start a new session (confirms if count ≥ 10)
F
Toggle fullscreenExpand to full screen for easier tapping

Tip: Keyboard shortcuts only fire when you are not typing in a text field, so they will not interfere with other apps running in the same window.

Fullscreen mode and mobile gestures

Two features make the tap counter particularly useful in physical environments — gyms, events, doorways, and warehouses:

🖥️

Fullscreen mode

  • Click the fullscreen button (or press F) to take over the entire screen.
  • The count number scales up dramatically — readable from across a room.
  • Control buttons remain at the bottom for easy access.
  • Press F or Escape to exit fullscreen.

📱

Mobile swipe gesture

  • Swipe down on the counter area (>60 px) to subtract 1.
  • A short tap on the same area adds 1 — the tool distinguishes a tap from a swipe automatically.
  • The phone vibrates briefly (15 ms) on every tap and subtract for haptic feedback.
  • Screen stays on automatically — the phone will not lock mid-count.

Screen wake lock: The tool requests a screen wake lock when the page loads, so your phone screen stays on while you count. If your browser does not support this (older browsers may not), the screen may lock normally after the usual timeout — keep this in mind for long counting sessions.

What can you count with it?

🏋️

Exercise reps & sets

Count push-ups, pull-ups, squats, or any rep-based workout. Vibration feedback means you never have to look at the screen.

🚶

People counting

Count visitors at an event, guests at a door, or foot traffic in a store. Fullscreen mode makes the number visible to staff without squinting.

🏊

Laps & intervals

Count pool laps, running laps, or timed intervals. The counter never goes below 0, so swipe-down corrections stay safe.

📦

Stock & inventory

Count items on a shelf, boxes in a shipment, or units in production. Copy the final count directly to your clipboard.

📿

Prayer & meditation

Use it as a digital mala or rosary counter. Vibration feedback provides a tactile rhythm without looking at the screen.

🎯

Scores & tallies

Keep score during games, track votes in a poll, or tally survey responses. The Copy button makes it easy to log each round.

Features & limitations

Screen stays on — the Wake Lock API prevents your phone from locking mid-count.

Vibrates on tap (mobile) — 15 ms haptic feedback on every count, subtract, and reset.

Fullscreen mode — the count fills the entire screen for easy reading at a distance.

No maximum — the counter has no upper limit and scales the font size as the number grows.

No persistent storage — closing or refreshing the tab resets the count to 0. Copy the number before navigating away.

Single counter only — there is one counter per session; multiple simultaneous tallies are not supported.

Minimum count is 0 — the counter cannot go negative.

Frequently asked questions

Will the count be saved if I close the tab?

No — the counter is session-only. If you close or refresh the tab the count resets to 0. Use the Copy button to save the number to your clipboard before navigating away.

Why does the counter stop at 0 when I subtract?

The counter is designed never to go negative. If you tap − when the count is already 0, nothing happens. This prevents accidental negative tallies when correcting miscounts.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Once the page has loaded, the counter works offline — all the counting logic runs in your browser. However, the initial page load requires an internet connection.

Why does my phone screen stay on?

The tool uses the Screen Wake Lock API to prevent the display from going to sleep while you count. This is intentional and released automatically when you leave the page. It requires a supported browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari on iOS 16.4+).

The Reset button asked me to confirm — is that normal?

Yes. If the count is 10 or above, the tool shows a confirmation before resetting to protect against accidental resets mid-session. If the count is below 10, it resets immediately without asking.

Can I use it on a smartwatch or very small screen?

The tool is optimised for phones, tablets, and desktops. On very small screens the tap zone still works, but the control buttons may be cramped. Fullscreen mode is not available on all watch browsers.
